Atabey’s Birth Path

is a sacred space dedicated to reclaiming the wisdom of traditional birthwork.

Inspired by Atabey, a revered mother figure in Caribbean ancestral traditions, this path embodies the essence of fertility, nurturing, and the sacred cycles of life.

Rooted in indigenous and African diasporic practices, it honors birth as a ceremony, empowering birthworkers and mothers through holistic education, intuitive guidance, and spiritual rites.

This path serves as a bridge between ancient traditions and modern birthwork, offering a holistic approach to fertility, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care. Whether you are seeking knowledge, mentorship, or deeper connection, Atabey’s Birth Path provides the foundation for a profound journey into the art of birthwork.

  • Tier 1: The Foundations – Six-Week Online Birthworkers (Doula) Training

This tier is the gateway into the world of traditional and holistic birthwork, providing a strong foundation for those who wish to serve birthing mothers with ancestral wisdom and evidence-based care. Participants will learn the fundamental aspects of birthwork, including ethics, the role of the birthkeeper, pregnancy anatomy, physiological birth, and cultural birth practices.

This tier emphasizes advocacy and the importance of maternal autonomy, equipping birthworkers with the skills to provide emotional, educational, spiritual, and physical support. Birthworkers trained in this tier will be prepared to support women in hospitals, birthing centers, home births, and spontaneous births, ensuring that all birthing mothers receive the compassionate care they deserve.

In addition to self-paced learning, students will have access to six live virtual meetups via Google Meet. These interactive sessions provide an opportunity to ask questions, engage in deeper discussions, and receive real-time support from the instructor. Weekly meetups will ensure students feel confident in their understanding of each module while building community with fellow birthworkers. Recorded sessions will be available for those unable to attend live.

  • Tier 2: The Apprentice Path – Six-Month Guided Mentorship

This tier is designed for those ready to deepen their skills through hands-on learning, shadowing, and direct mentorship. Completion of Tier 1 is required before advancing to this level.

Apprentices will work closely with experienced birthworkers, midwives, and traditional healers, refining their knowledge and applying techniques in real-life birthing scenarios. Through this mentorship, students will gain an immersive experience in holistic pregnancy support, labor preparation, postpartum healing, and herbal medicine.

This tier fosters a deeper understanding of the sacred responsibility of birthkeeping while developing intuition, confidence, and skill in assisting births across different settings, including hospitals, birthing centers, and home births.

  • Tier 3: The Initiate – One-Year Traditional Birthkeeping Apprenticeship

Tier 3 is an immersive, hands-on experience designed to solidify your role as a birthkeeper through direct engagement in labor, delivery, and postpartum care. Completion of Tier 1 & Tier 2 is required before advancing to this level.

This tier focuses on practical application, advanced holistic pain management techniques, herbal and energetic support, and emergency preparedness for birthworkers. Students will work in real birthing environments, applying their skills in advocacy, spiritual guidance, and physical assistance for laboring mothers.

A key component of this tier is community birth support—learning how to hold space, assist in emergency or spontaneous births, and provide postpartum healing services that integrate traditional wisdom with modern knowledge.

Through this experience, students will build the confidence to support diverse birthing scenarios while deepening their connection to the ancestral role of the birthkeeper.

  • The Birthworker’s Rite – Tropical Retreat Styled Initiation Ceremony

This is a sacred rite of passage that marks the transition from student to fully embodied birthworker. This tier is a retreat-style initiation held in the tropics, immersing participants in ancestral, indigenous, and holistic traditions of birthwork.

At this level, birthworkers will undergo ceremonial preparation, spiritual cleansing, and deep personal transformation, solidifying their wisdom, resilience, and commitment to birthwork. Through sacred teachings, fire circles, sweat lodges, hand-blessing rituals, and other initiatory rites, participants will step into their birthkeeper identity with confidence and purpose.

The journey is both personal and communal, culminating in a symbolic anointing that acknowledges each birthkeeper’s path, skills, and spiritual calling. Participants will leave with a keepsake and certification, as well as the deep-rooted understanding that birthwork is not just a practice—it is a way of life.
